Over the past few days, I have had a bunch of new patients that have asked me a similar question,
I remember hurting my back when I was a kid, could that have anything to do with my pain today?
My follow-up question to these patients is always,
What kind of treatment did you have then to help your problem?
Their response is almost always the same,
None
Well, the answer to their question is an absolute YES! Left untreated or improperly treated, trauma to the spine can have long-term effects. Often, patients go for years in a pain-free state, then unfortunately, they do something they have done a thousand times before like lift up their child, pick their keys up off the floor or carry in a bag of groceries, and their back goes out.
In my office, I address the spinal issues that are causing the problem by using gentle chiropractic care and reinforcing the treatment with core-strengthening exercises to prevent or minimize further episodes.
